The United Nations Human Development has posted it's 2006 report. In it, countries are rated on many factors including health, education, and wealth. They describe it thusly:
The Human Development Report (HDR) was first launched in 1990 with the single goal of putting people back at the center of the development process in terms of economic debate, policy and advocacy. The goal was both massive and simple, with far-ranging implications — going beyond income to assess the level of people’s long-term well-being. Bringing about development of the people, by the people, and for the people, and emphasizing that the goals of development are choices and freedoms. You can find the list all the countries of the world by rank here . Where is your country and what do you think of the list?

I was just reading this in the newspapers. Funnily enough, without knowing the details of this report and without really knowing intimate facts about Norway, the other day I was thinking of places I might want to live if not in Trinidad and Norway was one of my choices (or Scandinavia on the whole) simply because they seem so globally neutral and at peace, from my perspective.
United Kingdom, where I live, is quite high. China (my home country) isn't doing too badly either.
So does Switzerland, only it's warmer there :) Bulgaria is 54 on the list which is a pretty good result. I don't think the number is important though, because there will always be a first and last country. The point is to make the margin between them as small as possible.
I actually have a draft upon this issue, but I liked your way of presenting it better, Jane! I reckond since the education and the social welfare system, by far is covered by the state, most people is provided good conditions and possibilities. Norwegians were poor farmers and fishermen until oil was discovered and quite rapidly altered our country. I question myself what impact too much material richness has upon people and the comming generations. There are those who drop out - why and how to help them, maintain solidarity with less fortunate people and countries. I guess the rating makes us aware of great responsibility in a global sence; to share and help, even recognize what other countries do better.
My first reaction was a bit negative- I didn't like to see all the countries numbered and I wondered about the critereon for the list. It would be so discouraging for the bottom countries. But after checking a bit, I think it is a good report, they looked at many issues to come up with their numbers.
I would rather see the countries grouped, rather than numbered and I like Filip's comment about making the differences less. The graphs sort of show that- they have most countries making progress and the lines merging a little. But there are still big gaps and I would hope that would be the main message.
Also, there is no way to see the differences within a country- are there a few advantaged people and many disadvantaged?
I did have to chuckle at the news article I saw about the Norwegian minister who heard the report and said that now his fellow countrymen should stop whining. (can't find it again) I think that is a good reminder for many folks.
(sorry I stole your post, ingunn. I just thought it was a good topic)
No : ) I just supported your post. I tried to express that real life quality, not always has anything to do with wealth. In richer countries, the more loneliness and psycic problems, and the appropriate comment about whining.. I hope the report promote the good goals and values.
