For today's snack, I had Sumang Magkayakap, a popular Filipino delicacy made of sweet sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves. Magkayakap, when translated means embrace. The suman are wrapped in separate banana leaves and tied together, resembling a tight embrace. The secret to a delicious suman is its special brown sauce made of sugar and coconut milk.

really looks yummy :)
It must be very very sweet !
Thanks Shona Tiger and Gattina for the comments. Yes, it is very sweet and very filling. Hope you'll have the chance to try it someday.
I didn't know banana leaves were edible. I'll have to try it.
Hi Jane. Actually, the banana leaves are just used for wrapping but you don't eat them. The suman is the white one inside, made of sweet sticky rice.
This looks just like our pastelles, which we make around Christmas time. They are cornmeal 'pillows' filled with either minced meat, capers, raisins, etc. (or vegetarian filling/soya, etc. instead of meat), wrapped in banana leaves and boiled. And yes ... Jane, don't eat the banana leaves!
Hi Elspeth. Those pastelles sound really appetizing. Thanks for sharing a version of your country's delicacy.
