Election Campaign to Start 28 Days Ahead of Elections in Azerbaijan

The election campaign for the presidential elections in Azerbaijan will begin 28 days ahead of presidential elections and will end 24 hours before it, Natig Mammadov, the spokesman for Central Election Committee of Azerbaijan said on 18 July.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October 2008. The description of regulations of conducting election campaign in mass media was also discussed in CEC meeting on 18 July.

According to Mammadov, the description also includes the political advertisements. The political advertisement is posting promotion materials in media to shape public opinion in favor of election program and platform. According to the spokesman, the description says that the free of charge election campaign of candidates will be conducted in only Public TV. The dissemination or printing agitation materials in private radio and TV channels or in private periodicals will be carried out voluntarily or with payment. “The free of charge air time for the election campaign in Public TV and Radio must not exceed three hours,” Mammadov said and added that the free of charge air time will be divided among the candidates by casting of lots.

Get ready for the show! :)

Concrete Canoe Races

Each June, teams from colleges across the USA, meet to race the canoes that they have made from concrete. Why this silliness? Back in 1969, Professor Clyde Kesler of the University of Illinois wanted his class in the Properties and Behavior of Concrete to improvise and find new applications for concrete. So he proposed the project to them. Students at nearby Purdue University heard of the idea and decided to make a contest of it. The first races were held in 1971 between the two schools with 163 kg and 57 kg canoes plowing through the shallow waters of Inland Sea, a small lake in Illinois. Illinois won, due to an untimely capsize by the Purdue team.

Now, sponsored by the ASCE, over 100 schools from the USA, as well as from Canada, and Mexico, compete in 18 conference competitions to earn the right to advance to the finals in June. They are scored with a combination of the race itself, their design papers, a formal presentation of their design, and the end product. The winning school is awarded scholarship money for students in engineering.

This year’s races
were in Montreal, with the University of Nevada, Reno, taking top honors.

My hometown team, UAH, came in fourth in their conference and so did not get to go to the finals this year. But they plan to make a strong showing at next year’s competition scheduled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama!

Blessed Flow..

This shot I've taken by the Nile...!
One of the most enjoyable moments is when you witness the Nile.. and enjoy the nice breeze there..and feel that relief and serenity...and ponder on Life and its quest...!
Egypt is indeed gifted by the Nile ..! No wonders that it's been the main item sang to in all our Egyptian classical songs.. all such romantic songs... and it's very common to see along the Nile the couples of all ages... letting their dreams go along the stream.
